Eighth-grade girls bury Fort Madison
Fairfield Middle School’s eighth-grade girls turned another big, early lead into a lopsided victory Monday, beating Fort Madison 65-13 in hoops action.
Kylie Kurtz led the Trojans on their home court with 18 points, and Mikaela Lunsford and Sam Fritz scored 11 apiece. Kenady Waugh scored nine points, Haley Beard netted six, and both Brooke McLain and Kaylee Watson finished with four points. Brynna Bowman tacked on two points.
“The girls started off dominating right from the start. We had four points in less than 30 seconds and that just set the tone for the game,” said Fairfield coach Derek Philips. “We were more physical, made some shots, and got out and pushed the ball really well tonight. It was a great effort for us tonight.”
The Trojans led 26-5 at the end of the first quarter and held a 40-6 lead at the intermission.
The girls also played six quarters of a combined ‘B’ and ‘C’ game, which ended with a 24-19 victory for the Trojans. Fairfield’s Natalie Angstead led the way with 12 points. Shelby Heston and Sarah Swanson scored four points each, and Shelby McKune and RaeAnn McClaran finished with two apiece.
“We had a lot of different lineups in there tonight to ensure everyone saw playing time. Our girls worked hard and came out on top,” summed up Philips.
The Trojans continue their homestand today against Burlington’s Aldo Leopold.
