Eldon celebrating American Gothic Days

ELDON — The annual American Gothic Days will be Friday through Sunday in Eldon.

The annual celebration begins with Supper in the Park from 5-7 p.m. Friday in City Park. The Des Moines River Boat Dock Committee will serve a fried fish meal for a freewill donation.

Saturday begins with breakfast served at the Eldon United Methodist Church from 6-8 p.m.

Registration for the 5K run/walk begins at 6:45 a.m. at the American Gothic House Center, and the event starts at 7:30 a.m. For information, call 319-652-3352.

Parade line up will be at 9 a.m. at the Assembly of God Church, with the parade stepping off at 10 a.m. Linda Pool can provide information about the parade at 319-652-3326.

A barbecued chicken dinner and free kids’ games are planned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the KD Center.

Cardboard boat races will be at 3 p.m. at the Wapello County Fairgrounds. For information, call Shelly White at 641-777-8822.

Sunday’s events include a bicycle ride, breakfast and several tournaments.

Registration for the bike ride starts at 6:45 a.m. at the American Gothic House Center. The ride starts at 7:30 a.m. For information, call 319-652-3352.

The Fire House Breakfast will be served from 7-10 a.m. at the Eldon Fire Station.

A disc golf tournament begins at 9 a.m. at the American Gothic House. Call Jack Hayes at 641-895-6036 for details.

A mud volleyball tournament starts at 1 p.m. at the KD Center. Preregistration is required. Call Lori Franklin at 641-652-7892.

Bocce ball and horseshoe tournaments also start at 1 p.m. Call Roger Gosnell at 641-777-4171 for information.

American Gothic Days also will include the American Gothic Performing Arts presentation of the musical “Pump Boys and Dinettes” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Sunday and 2 p.m. Saturday in the McHaffey Opera House.

The opera house will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

The Eldon Depot Museum will be open for tours and train rides from 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The American Gothic House Center will be open and displaying the Gothic Days art contest entries from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Pitchfork Pie Stand outside the American Gothic House will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

An arts, crafts and flea market will be open Saturday and Sunday in City Park. Call 641-680-2634 for information.
