Emergency teams conducting training at Eddyville school

May 15, 2017

The Wapello and Mahaska emergency management teams, law enforcement and emergency responders, will conduct a training exercise June 7 at the Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont Junior/Senior High School in Eddyville.

The training is a crisis-response exercise. The practice exercise will consist of a simulated scenario to facilitate a coordinated partner response to a fictitious active shooter.

Direct participants from 14 agencies will include Mahaska and Wapello counties’ law enforcement, fire, ambulance, county emergency management, and Life Flight, as well as representatives from the Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont Community School District.

Approximately 20 to 30 volunteers from Job Corps and Indian Hills Community College will be participating in the simulation. No Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont student involvement is planned as classes will release for summer break prior to the event.

The training exercise is designed to expand levels of multi-agency cooperation, strengthen mutual capabilities, and enhance school security and communication. Both crisis management responses and communication have been adapted beforehand on the basis of lessons drawn from previous exercises and several months of collaborative planning meetings between Wapello and Mahaska counties.

Traffic on Berdan street in proximity of the EBF Junior-Senior High will be restricted during the event, and residents should expect to see and hear several emergency response vehicles during the simulation.

For further information about the training event, contact Tim Richmond, Wapello County EMA, at 641-814-8333 or Jamey Robinson, Mahaska County EMA, at 641-672-1209.
