Fairfield baseball earns road sweep of Panthers
After letting a home contest against Mt. Pleasant get away earlier this season, Fairfield went to face the Panthers with a clear mission Monday.
The Class 3A No. 5 Trojans (21-7, 10-3 SEC) swept their doubleheader at Mt. Pleasant (14-13, 6-6 SEC) with scores of 7-3 and 10-3.
Cameron Baumann went four innings on the hill in game one, allowing just five hits, two walks and one earned run. He struck out five Panthers.
Senior Wyatt Stark would come in as Baumann’s relief and subsequently shut the door. Stark struck out three over three innings of work and didn’t allow a hit.
Austin Gridley finished the game 3-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. The homer was Gridley’s sixth bomb of the year.
Austin Christensen drove in two runs. Micah Harris smacked two hits and drove in one.
A six-run fifth inning pushed Fairfield to its 10-3 victory in the nightcap. Gridley hit a triple to get the fifth inning rally started which scored Kooper Dahlstrom.
Alex Crile went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Mason Ellis, who came through with two hits in the opening game, hit another double and finished the contest with two more hits.
Gridley pitched the first 3 1/3 innings before being relieved by Joe Hietpas. The next 2 2/3 innings completed belonged to Hietpas, who shut down the Panthers to the tune of zero hits and four strikeouts. Stark pitched the seventh inning and closed the deal. He struck out two in his only inning of work.
Fairfield hosts Mid-Prairie-Wellman tonight before traveling to Washington for a Southeast Conference doubleheader Thursday. The Trojans have put together four conference wins in a row since falling at Fort Madison last week.
