Fairfield baseball earns weekend victory
The Fairfield baseball team defeated Davis County 7-3 Saturday in Bloomfield.
The game was close until Fairfield scored five runs in the fifth inning. The inning started with a home run blast from Austin Gridley.
“It took a few innings for the offense to get going,” Fairfield coach Josh Allison said. “Gridley’s home run run put us over the hump.”
Gridley, Mason Ellis, Jordan Reid, Alex Crile and Cameron Baumann each finished the game with two hits. Crile delivered a double and three RBI.
Joe Hietpas started the game and went four innings, giving up two runs and striking out six in the process. Wyatt Stark pitched the last three innings and didn’t allow a run to pick up the win.
The game Friday in Ottumwa was canceled because of rain. Fairfield’s victory over the Mustangs meant it would play Van Buren later in the day because it was a four team tournament. That matchup was also rained out. Fairfield will play Wednesday at Chariton.
