Fairfield baseball wins on road at Grinnell
As the postseason approaches, the Fairfield baseball team continues to enjoy a hot streak at the expense of their opponents.
The Class 3A No. 5 Trojans won on the road against Grinnell 4-2 Monday. Fairfield has now won eight of its last nine games.
Grinnell (13-16) struck first in the bottom of the first inning, bringing home one run due to a batter being hit by a pitcher and two Fairfield errors. The Trojans recovered quickly and tied the game in the second inning with a solo home run off the bat of Cameron Baumann. The freshman outfielder now has eight home runs on the season, which is good enough for second on the team behind Austin Gridley, who currently has 10.
Fairfield would tack on two more runs in the fifth inning with RBI hits from Joe Hietpas and Kooper Dahlstrom. A seventh-inning RBI single from Baumann was all the support the Trojans would need.
Wyatt Stark started on the mound and went three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Hietpas relieved Stark and went the rest of the way, earning the win. Neither pitcher allowed an earned run. Hietpas finished with four strikeouts on the night.
Fairfield (25-7) will host a doubleheader tonight against Oskaloosa to conclude its regular season schedule. The district playoffs begin Friday, with the Fort Madison Bloodhounds coming to Fairfield. The playoff matchup will begin at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will play either Mt. Pleasant or Oskaloosa.
