Fairfield bounces back at West softball classic

Jun 03, 2013

IOWA CITY — The Fairfield softball team bounced back nicely following two disappointing defeats against Washington to earn a pair of wins at the Iowa City West Classic Friday.

The Trojans (5-3) opened the annual softball classic with an 8-2 victory over host West and finished the tournament with a 9-3 win against Centerville.

Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield said the improvements were easy to see coming off their Wednesday losses to Washington.

“Our pitchers threw a little better and our defense played better. That was sort of the difference between Wednesday and Friday,” the coach said. “We had a few key hits in both games, and we took advantage of [Centerville’s] mistakes in the second game.”

In the opener vs. Iowa City West, Alli Deao tossed a four-hitter and only allowed one run in the contest. The freshman starter fanned two and walked none.

Offensively, the Trojans banged out seven hits off West’s Jessie Harder. Leadoff hitter Sydney Burnett smashed a two-run home run as part of the Trojans’ three-run third inning, and Mackenzie McClure finished the contest 2-for-3. Marisa Repp smoked a run-scoring double, McKenna Ledger hit a double, and Jolea Burkhart and Mackenzi Harwood had one hit apiece.

The Trojans held a 3-1 lead for most of the contest and tacked on one final run in the seventh. Burnett reached on an error in the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.

In the second game vs. Centerville, Fairfield opened it up with a four-run first inning and never trailed. Centerville committed two errors in the inning, and Karley Williams took advantage with a two-run single. Ledger also produced a run-scoring double in the first.

Fairfield, which led 7-3 after three innings, put two more runs on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. Mackenzie Flattery doubled home a run and later scored on another Centerville error in the final frame.

Senior starter Haley Grunwald went the distance to pick up the win, holding the Big Redettes to just three runs on five hits. Grunwald gave up just one earned run and punched out seven batters over seven innings.

Williams finished the game with a pair of RBI, and Ledger and Flattery both hit an RBI double as the Trojans tallied eight total hits. Burnett, Kenady Waugh, McClure, Madison Roberts and Burkhart also had one hit apiece.

Fairfield begins a busy week today with a varsity doubleheader at Southeast Conference rival Fort Madison (0-2). They then host Keokuk (0-4) Thursday before playing their home softball tournament Friday-Saturday.

“This week is a big week for us, so hopefully Friday propels us into big things this week,” Bradfield said. “We’ll have four conference games that are pretty huge. There’s still a long ways to go, but this is a good opportunity for us.”
