ALBIA — The Fairfield boys’ basketball team was handed its third straight loss to open the season Tuesday, falling 57-48 to Albia.

Fairfield fell behind 21-9 after the first quarter and scored just eight points in the second period to trail 31-17 at halftime.

“We didn’t play a good first half. We gave up a lot of good second chance opportunities, we were only 3 of 12 from the free throw line, so a combination of things dug ourselves a hole,” said Fairfield head coach Tyler Miklo.

A big reason for the early deficit was Albia sophomore Matt Baker, who scored 21 of his 26 points in the first half. Miklo was pleased to see his team hold Baker to just five points following the intermission.

“Baker was really impressive at the start. We lost him too many times through screens, but we did a better job on him in the second half,” said Miklo. “It was encouraging to slow him down.”

With Baker held in check, the Trojans cut Albia’s lead to three with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The visitors fell short of the all-out comeback, however, as Albia answered back with a final run of its own.

“Credit goes to our kids for not giving up and clawing back in the second half,” said Miklo. “We showed in the second half we’re capable of being a good ball team, we just have to figure out a way to be a four-quarter ball club.”

Senior Spencer Peterman led the Trojans with 12 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Joe Hietpas scored eight points and three assists, Matt Carr had seven points with six rebounds, and freshman Jordan Reid made his varsity debut with six points and four boards.

Also for Fairfield, senior Kyle Weirup finished the game with six points and two steals, Darrin Dimmitt tallied six points and three assists and Vince Horras pulled down six rebounds.

“I thought all our guys did some good things, and now we’re looking to get back to work tomorrow and prepare for Friday’s game against Washington.”

The Trojans host the Demons on Friday.
