Fairfield boys take fifth at Chariton InviteHietpas shoots a 36 on the front nine
The Fairfield boys’ golf team shot a 318 Saturday at the Chariton Invitational.
At many meets this season that would have been a good enough score to earn a victory, but this time around it was only good enough for fifth. Creston won the meet with the score of 298. Centerville, Pella and Knoxville all scored just ahead of Fairfield, while Albia, Clarke County and Chariton rounded out the field.
“318 is not a horrible score,” Fairfield coach Mick Flattery said. “We had two guys in the 70s, but we needed three [or more]. Great competition again.”
Joe Hietpas shot his career low on the front nine, scoring a 36 thanks to two birdies. He finished the day with an 80. Matt Carr led the Trojans with a 77, while Nick Higgins shot a 78. Dillon Shelby earned an 83 and Landon Gamrath shot an 87. The team was without senior Alex Shier, who do did not play because of an illness.
The Trojans are now 47-10 on the season. They will compete for a Southeast Conference title Tuesday in Washington. Fairfield’s largest competition for the conference title is likely Mt. Pleasant, which was able to beat Fairfield once this season.
