Fairfield girls crown two in doubles action
The Trojan girls’ tennis team rebounded from a rough start in singles action and rolled to two doubles titles at the Southeast Conference tournament Monday in Fairfield.
After wrapping up singles play with no champions to show from six brackets, the Trojan girls were the big winner in the tournament’s second half. At No. 2 doubles, the third-seeded duo of Karley Williams and Rachel Hathaway pulled off two straight upsets, as did the fourth-seeded duo of Courtney Laux and Hanna Kerr at No. 3.
Williams and Hathaway won 8-6 vs. Mount Pleasant’s Shelby Barton and Becca Lehman. The sophomore-senior tandem then shocked top-seeded Lakyn Boltz and Alexis Kemp of Keokuk with a 9-7 victory.
Meanwhile, Laux and Kerr were equally impressive as they took an 8-5 win over top-seeded Kayley Plate and Kassidy Horner of Fort Madison and an 8-4 victory against Keokuk’s Marissa Hasselbusch and Brittany Logan in the finals.
Fairfield’s No. 1 doubles team of Haylee Gilpin and Kim O’Carroll finished fourth with losses to Mount Pleasant’s Taylor Beatty and Tasha Glover and Fort Madison’s Taylor Powell and Kirsten Wells.
The doubles victories narrowed the packed field of four teams, but Fairfield still finished in fourth place. Keokuk won the team title scoring 15 points, and Fort Madison and Mount Pleasant tied for second place with 14 apiece. Fairfield scored 11, with six of their points coming in doubles play.
Both No. 2 player Williams and No. 5 Laux finished second in their respective singles brackets earlier Monday.
Fairfield now takes a break in the action before hosting Oskaloosa Saturday in the first round of Class 1A regional team tennis. The matchup gets started at 9 a.m.
