Fairfield girls’ golf squad opens season
After a delayed start to the season, the Fairfield girls’ golf team was finally able to hit its home links Thursday with a non-conference dual vs. Ottumwa.
The Trojans fell to the seasoned Ottumwa squad by 52 strokes, 194-246, as Lindsey Repp led the host team with a 51 on the nine-hole Fairfield Golf & Country Club course.
“It was really good to see a freshman come up out of the gate like that. We’re looking for big things out of her,” Fairfield head coach Joe Kruzich said of Repp. “She could’ve probably done even better, but she had a few hiccups at a few points. We’ll be looking to clean all that up.”
Ashley Henkel shot second lowest for the Trojans at 60, and senior teammate Kristen Terrell carded a 63.
“Both girls had a few hiccups but also had a few bright spots. I’m sure they were looking to score in that mid-50s range,” the second-year coach said.
Also for Fairfield, freshmen Abby Adam and Madelyn Swan reported with scores of 72 and 73, respectively. Senior newcomer Claire Slechta shot an 88 to round out the Trojans’ lineup.
“We broke 250 as a team, and I don’t think we did that until after a few meets last year,” Kruzich added. “That gives us something to build on.”
Ottumwa’s Whitney Dostal earned meet medalist honors with a 46.
The Fairfield girls’ golf team returns to action today vs. Van Buren and Davis County at Keosauqua.
