Fairfield JV softball splits with Burlington
BURLINGTON — Fairfield JV Black softball split its season-opening doubleheader with Burlington on Tuesday.
Fairfield won the first game 8-2 but fell to the host Grayhounds in the second game 5-2.
Kelsey Roberts and Corynn Klehm both tallied two singles and scored twice to lead the Trojan offense in the first game. Taylor Ferrel smacked a double and a single, scoring once. Kaylee Watson and Haley Beard had one RBI apiece, and both Sara Trent and Jasmine Elmore scored once.
Brynna Bowman, who had an RBI single, pitched a six-inning complete game to pick up the win for Fairfield. She allowed two hits and a walk while facing just 24 batters. Bowman struck out five.
In game two, Ashlyn Elmore and Natalie Angstead tallied two base knocks apiece. Brooke McLain and Beard each whacked a single and scored once, Trent came through with a single and Delaney Neil finished with an RBI.
Beard pitched the first four innings, allowing one hit and four walks while fanning six. Beard was credited with three runs before Neil entered in relief to pitch the final two innings. Neil gave up two hits and two runs, punching out one batter.
Fairfield’s Freshman Orange squad heads to Mount Pleasant for a 5:30 game today. JV Black hosts its home opener vs. Ottumwa at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Ninth-graders add games to schedule
The Fairfield softball team recently added two ninth-grade games to its 2013 schedule.
The Trojans will take on Davis County on both dates, including an away game in Bloomfield Tuesday, May 28, and a home game in Fairfield Wednesday, July 3.
The games will start at 5:30 p.m.
