Gov. Terry E. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds presented Fairfield’s Hometown Rewards Program with an Environmental Excellence Award for leadership and innovation in energy efficiency Thursday at the Wallace Building in Des Moines.

The Governor’s Iowa Environmental Excellence Awards are the premier environmental honors in Iowa, recognizing leadership and innovation in the protection of Iowa’s natural resources.

Awards were presented for overall environmental excellence as well as for specific environmental improvements in areas such as energy efficiency, water quality, waste management, air quality, habitat restoration, and environmental education. During the ceremony, 20 Iowa businesses and organizations were acknowledged for their outstanding contributions to the environment. The city of Fairfield was selected to participate in a two-year partnership with Interstate Power and Light Company, an Alliant Energy company, through its Hometown Rewards program. The purpose of the Hometown Rewards Program in Fairfield is to focus on energy efficiency and conservation goals outlined in the city’s strategic Go Green Plan through grass-roots community efforts.

More information is available online at www.fairfieldgogreen.com.

The program is a partnership between the city of Fairfield, Alliant Energy, KRUU 100.1 FM, KMCD-Classic 96, Hy-Vee, and COSC.
