Fairfield softball team crowned SEC champs
The 2014 Southeast Conference title for softball will reside in Fairfield.
The Trojans (25-6, 12-1 SEC) clinched the hardware by sweeping Keokuk (21-12, 9-5) in both games of a doubleheader Thursday.
Fairfield won game one of the double dip 4-3 on a walk-off hit from Kenady Waugh that scored Sydney Burnett. The game itself was back-and-forth, with neither team scoring more than one run in any inning.
“Fortunately we got the last at bat and were able to drive home a run,” Fairfield coach Bob Bradfield said.
Waugh finished with two hits and a RBI. Sara Trent drove in two runs on two hits of her own. Marisa Repp also smacked two hits.
Keokuk needed a sweep of Fairfield to have any hopes of winning the conference. With their hopes of a title dashed, the Trojans jumped on the Chiefs early and won 8-0.
“We came up and hit the ball really well,” Bradfield said. “In the second game everything went our way.”
Waugh came up huge again, racking up two more hits and two RBIs. The freshman shortstop also wreaked havoc on the base paths by scoring twice and stealing two bases.
Mackenzie McClure doubled and drove in two runs. Brynna Bowman and Karley Williams each drove in a run also.
Haley Beard, just like teammate Alli Deao did the first game, pitched a complete game. Over seven innings Beard allowed just four hits, one walk and struck out four. Beard, who has possesses an 11-1 record, has a 3.24 ERA on the season.
Mt. Pleasant will host the Trojans tonight. Fairfield is 2-0 against the rival Panthers this season.
