Fairfield sports briefs: Summer camps, freshmen softball, Ide Gymnastics
Youth basketball camps receive summer start dates
The Fairfield Youth Basketball Program will be sponsoring two youth basketball camps this summer.
The Fairfield boys’ basketball camp will be held June 9-13 at Fairfield High School. Grades 8-12 will run from 8-11 a.m. and grades 3-7 will run from 12-3 p.m. This camp will be led by FHS boys’ basketball coach Tyler Miklo with assistance from his players and assistant coaches. The cost is $50 for the 15-hour camp, which will include prizes and T-shirts for campers.
There will also be an “Extra Effort” basketball camp. This camp will consist of nine, hour-long sessions, held at FHS. Miklo will run this camp as well. Camp hours for grades 8-12 will run from 8-9 a.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Thurdsay starting June 16 and concluding July 3. Grades 3-7 will meet from 9-10 a.m. on the same dates. The cost for this camp is $40.

Volleyball camps to start in June
There will be a Fairfield girls’ volleyball camp for grades 6-8 from 1-3 p.m. on June 16-20.
There also will be a camp for grades 9-12 from 8:30 a.m. to noon on August 4-8. Both of these camps will be at Fairfield High School and will be instructed by FHS volleyball head coach Nancy Diers.
Campers will receive T-shirts. The camp for grades 6-8 is $40, while the high school camp is $50. Team drills and volleyball skills such as passing, setting, hitting and serving will be emphasized.
There will also be a beginners camp from 3-4 p.m. from June 16-20 for fourth and fifth grade girls. This camp is $20 and each camper will receive a T-shirt. Daily prizes are awarded as well.

Freshmen girls split games against Panthers
The Fairfield freshmen girls’ softball team split a doubleheader Wednesday against Mt. Pleasant at Fairfield Middle School.
The Trojans lost the first game 5-1. Sara Trent tossed 7 innings, gave up five runs and struck out four batters. At the plate, Trent went 2-2 with a double. Corynn Klehm and Ashlyn Elmore both got hits in the first game as well.
Ashtyn Drish threw a seven inning shutout in the second game, striking out four on her way to an 8-0 victory.
Drish did well at the plate also, smacking a home run and a triple. Klehm, Trent, Abby Gridley, Allie Kensett, Mikaela Lunsford and Nicole Buch each recorded a hit.
Ide Gymnastics wins big in Grimes
Members of Ide Gymnastics competed at the AmeriKids Iowa State Championships May 3 in Grimes.
Those who won a state championship were Ashlyn Elmore, Kristin Burnstedt, Alani Diyaljee, Madelyn Hanna, Ella Jirak, Alexis Jirak and Michelle Zhang.
The gymnasts that qualified for the AmeriKids National Competition in July are Lilly Bergren, Kaitlyn Greiner, Maya Lane, Carley Seeley, Brookelynn Silvers, Makenna Taylor, Trista Benedict and Juliette Pohren.
The team also brought home three team banners. They got third place in AK 1, fifth place in AK 2 and third place in novice optional.
