Fairfield takes third at state
The Fairfield Trojan boys’ team took third place in the State Bowling Tournament on Monday in Des Moines.
Last season, the Trojans finished seventh in state.
“This year they wanted to set the bar higher,” said Trojan head coach Lisa Greenig. “It wasn’t enough to make it to the tournament, they wanted to bring home some hardware. And they did.”
Eric Swan led the Trojans with a 438 series (211-227). Also for Fairfield, Brayden Miller rolled a 427, Kyle Ruckman 418, Brayden Fishel 397, Shane Morrissey 320 and Logan Stark 309.
“We didn’t do anything strategically different this year than last year,” Swan said. “We were just more confortable in the big setting. I’m not saying we weren’t a little nervous. But being more comfortable helped us perform much better.”
Swan, Miller, Ruckman and Stark are seniors.
“Finishing in third place means a lot to me, especially being a senior,” Swan said. “Last year at state, we didn’t do well and, I’m not gonna lie, we wanted revenge on a few teams — and we got that.”
Swan placed eighth as an individual and earned a medal for his 438 series.
“I didn’t expect to place as an individual,” Swan said. “I wanted to beat the series I had at state last year (435) and I’m glad I was able to do that.”
Also on Monday, the Trojans set a school record with a high Baker game of 268.
“Coach (Bryan) Marlay and I are so proud of how well the boys worked together,” Greenig said. “They stayed positive and focused throughout the match.”
