Fairfield Trojans compete in West Burlington Tuesday
The Fairfield Trojan girls’ track and field squad will compete in an 11-team meet at West Burlington High School on Tuesday.
“Practices have been going very well the last couple weeks,” said Trojan head coach Jerrod Belzer. “It’s been nice to have a lot of time outside, we’ve had some great workouts and feel like the girls are getting in pretty good shape. They’re definitely ready for a meet though.”
It’s been almost three weeks since the Trojans participated in a meet.
On March 9, at Cornell College, Fairfield started off its season on a strong note, the highlight a school record- tying performance by high jumper Malory Jones, who cleared 5 feet, 4 inches.
“The athletes, as well as us coaches, are ready to get out and perform again,” Belzer said. “Certainly we have some girls that we’re expecting to perform well on Tuesday: Ashley Bloomquist, Malory Jones and Brynna Bowman to name a few. They all had great seasons last year and we want to see them compete at a high level early on.”
Bloomquist is a talented long distance runner, Bowman a highly skilled sprinter.
“However, for a lot of our other athletes, we’re just looking to see where they’re at,” Belzer said. “For a lot of these girls, it will be their first meet of the season so we just want to get them out there and have them compete well.”
FHS is on spring break so the Trojans will be shorthanded on Tuesday.
“We know with having half our team gone for spring break, it will be tough to be in the team race for first,” Belzer said. “But we’re still excited to get on the track.”
