Fairfield, Van Buren wrestlers can’t handle Keokuk Chiefs

Warriors fall to Trojans to end night

Photo by: ALLYUS FRITZ/Ledger photo Fairfield’s Bryce Lunsford does his best to pin Keokuk’s Jacob Briscoe. Lunsford would go on to win this match and earn three points for the Trojans.

The match ended like it began, in a fury of arms and legs trying to overpower other arms and legs.

Fairfield’s Chris Workman (113) battled Van Buren’s Tyler Runyon to end the night. In the second round, Runyon flipped Workman over, trying to bend him around into an unnatural position. Both benches began screaming at their teammates as the match reached a breaking point.

“Don’t reach back just come up,” Fairfield coach Steve Miller yelled.

Runyon secured Workman to the mat, and would win by technical fall.

The Trojans hosted a triangular consisting of conference rival Keokuk and the Van Buren Warriors at Fairfield High School Thursday. The Chiefs would win against both teams, taking Fairfield 61-10 and Van Buren 71-3. The Warriors fell to the Trojans 42-32 to end the night.

Fairfield’s match against Keokuk was marked by close battles the Trojans couldn’t pull out. The 120, 126, 182 and 195 weight class matches all went three rounds, with the Trojans fighting hard but not achieving the final result. Fairfield also had to forfeit in four weight classes.

“It’s frustrating because you can see where we could have got more points,” Miller said. “Hopefully the kids hate losing. They need to have a stronger mentality.”

Van Buren’s only three points against Keokuk came courtesy of Mitch Garrels (195), who went three rounds with Keokuk’s Shawn Haage.

“We came out and set the tone offensively,” Keokuk coach Tom Rose said. “High school wrestling meets are kind of like snowballs, once a team gets a little momentum it’s hard to stop. We’re a young squad but we’re making big strides.”

Keokuk is now 10-1 on the season in team duals, while the Trojans are now 2-4. The Southeast Conference is shaping up to be extremely competitive this season. Washington and Fort Madison also possess teams equally as strong as Keokuk.

“The conference is tougher than we are right now, both mentally and physically,” Miller said. “We’re not matching up well with many of them.”

The Trojans battled back and beat Van Buren to end the night. Fairfield’s Bailey Jones (120) started off the match by earning six points over Kenan Nazli. Both coaches switched around their lineups to get favorable matchups. Van Buren’s Ty Stockwell, for instance, wrestled up a weight class and faced Austin Francisco (170) in an attempt to earn points. Francisco thwarted his attempt, however, pinning Stockwell and earning six points for the Trojans.

Randy Pugh (220) got a huge win for Fairfield. Max Spalla (195) went up against Garrels and nearly pulled an upset in one of the best bouts of the night. Miller was pleased that his team defeated Van Buren, but he was still disappointed in the team’s effort against Keokuk.

“We’ve got a lot of confidence building and growing to do,” Miller said. “We have to work on every facet of our program right now. I see it, and hopefully the kids see it. But you know, at the end of the day a win is a win.”

Fairfield faces off against Albia and Oskaloosa on Tuesday.
