Fairfield volleyball falls to Fort MadisonGreiner, Repp lead with six kills
The Fairfield volleyball team could not handle Fort Madison, and lost Tuesday by the score of 25-22, 25-12, 25-21.
The Trojans started off slow in the first set, allowing the Bloodhounds to take an early lead. Fairfield fought back and made it close, but by that point Fort Madison’s lead was insurmountable.
“We are upside down on our hitting right now,” Fairfield coach Nancy Diers said. “Our outside hitters and middle hitters could not stay in the flow.”
After a second set where the players seemed dismayed, Diers reminded her team of their motto this season, which is ‘dig deep and rise above.’ The Trojans came out and played hard in the third set, but it wasn’t enough to execute a comeback.
“We need to mentally stay in the game,” Diers said. “It’s kind of frustrating that we aren’t adjusting to what our opponents are doing.”
Hannah Greiner and Marisa Repp led the team in kills with six each. Keri Schwarz recorded five kills. Repp was second on the team in digs to Sydney Burnett, who finished with 15.
Alexis Ring and Kelsey Roberts saw significant playing time as well. Ring led the team with 13 assists with Roberts right behind her with 11.
The Trojans get a full week to prepare for their game at Mount Pleasant. The Panthers are currently 21-4 and they beat Fairfield twice this season. Diers thinks it will be a tough road going forward, but her players can still pull out a conference title.
“Realistically we will need some help to get back into the conference race,” Diers said. “I think they can do it. I have faith in them and confidence in them.”
