Arc of Jefferson & Nearby Counties

The Arc of Jefferson & Nearby Counties meeting was called to order by President Lynn Kane at 5:35 p.m. March 23 at Fairfield Tenco Industries.

The minutes and the treasurers report were accepted.

Several thank-you notes and other correspondence were read.

The fund-raising committee reported the spaghetti dinner went well, and a few suggestions were made for next year.

The Special Olympics committee said practice for track and field started March 24. Districts are Saturday in Mt. Pleasant with 13 Fairfield participants.

The county fair committee reported the Jefferson County Fair is June 21-25. Several people will be involved securing items for the silent auction. Booth workers will be scheduled.

The camp committee reported Lynn Kane will be attending Camp Courageous along with seven other adults and 25 students April 25-27.

The Arc has been in contact with Fairfield Park and Recreation Department about putting in a vending machine.

The scholarship committee reported one Susan Presley scholarship application has been received. The deadline was Saturday.

Jenn Kinder’s class went on a field trip. The class went to McDonald’s where each child who was able ordered their own food, handed the attendant a $20 bill, received the change, and got their own condiments. They then toured Hy-Vee. Left over money will be returned to the Arc.

An investigation of software for nonverbal students is ongoing.

The group discussed officers/directors absences. It was decided that after someone misses three meetings from September to May a letter will be sent to the individual asking if they would like to step down from their position or if there have been extenuating circumstances that have created the absences and they want to remain on the board.

A 5K run is set April 29 in Ottumwa. The money raised will help support the weighted blankets project.

The next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. April 27.
