Fairfield wrestler earns second placeMcCabe makes Iowa national team
Fairfield kindergartner Cael McCabe continues to impress on the wrestling mat.
Cael earned second place in the 40-pound weight class at the AAU Super Peewee State Folkstyle Invitational Championship Saturday in Waterloo. He competed in a 16-person bracket. Cael is now 55-11 in his career.
His father, Shae McCabe, runs a youth wrestling team called Team Wolverines. Fellow youngsters Cason Miller and Kenneth Houston also made the trip to Waterloo and competed.
Cael has two major events coming up. The first is the Corn Cob Nationals Sunday in Des Moines. This event will feature wrestlers from multiple states, including Minnesota, Missouri and Illinois. Cael was voted onto the Iowa Elementary Dual National Team and will wrestle in Tennessee in April. Only two wrestlers from each weight division are selected, and Cael’s recent success got him onto the team.
After that, it might be time for Cael to pick up his bat and glove and play baseball for the summer. This will happen if he can give up wrestling even for a short amount of time. Shae recently asked him if he wanted to play catch, but he had something else in mind.
“Let’s just get the mats out again,” Cael said.
