Fairfield wrestlers sixth at Mediapolis

Dec 10, 2012

MEDIAPOLIS — Injuries, ACTs and sickness had the Fairfield wrestling team down a few members Saturday at the Mediapolis tournament.

The Trojans, who were without half a lineup, settled for sixth place out of nine teams with 88 points. Third-ranked (Class 2A) Mediapolis won the team title with 280.5 points, Fort Madison finished second (179.5) and Blue Valley North (Kan.) was third (145).

Fairfield has now seen the top three ranked teams in Class 2A. They also wrestled with top-ranked West Delaware and No. 2 Davenport Assumption at last Saturday’s tourney.

“We’ve seen them and wrestled them all, and we’re standing behind them right now,” said Steve Miller, Fairfield’s second-year head coach. “We want to stand beside them. We don’t want to be standing behind anybody.”

Both Aaron Gevock and Seth Davisson fought their way to the championship round but settled for second-place medals. Gevock finished 2-1 on the day at 145 pounds, and Davisson went 1-1 at 182.

Ammon Shaner and Brett Scott both won third-place consolation matches at 132 and 195 pounds, respectively. Shaner finished 3-1 on the day while Scott was 1-1.

Adam Gevock came up from JV to replace Jake Mineart, who was out of the lineup taking his ACTs. The 220-pound senior had a career day, working his way to the third-place consolation match and finishing fourth. The Trojan won a pair of matches at the tournament.

“Adam was a diamond in the rough for us,” said Miller. “He’s worked through some adversity, and I was just exceptionally pleased with his effort.”

Also for Fairfield, Bryce Lunsford finished fifth at 160 pounds, while Dalton McCarroll was sixth in the 126 weight class.

The Trojans have a week off, then head to the Iowa City Regina tournament Saturday.
