Farmers’ market open in Keosauqua
KEOSAUQUA — Healthy Villages and Dollar Plus have coordinated efforts to start a new Villages Farmers Market in Keosauqua.
According to Melissa Daugherty, community wellness coordinator for Healthy Villages-Van Buren County Hospital, eating a well-balanced diet, including fruits and vegetables, is a very important part of living a healthy life.
“We want to make it easy for our residents to purchase those fresh local foods,” said Daugherty, which is why Healthy Villages is working with Joe and Stacey Reese of Dollar Plus on the new Villages Farmers Market.
According to the organizers, the benefits of the farmers’ market are not just to the customer.
Daugherty explained the market will allow vendors to feature what’s at the peak of season, along with local favorites, and share secrets on how to prepare their fresh offerings.
“Show off rhubarb or gooseberry pies,” she said. “Print recipes for the products you are selling. If they know they can freeze shredded zucchini, they might buy more of it.”
While the primary focus of the farmers’ market is the fruits and vegetables, it also is open to artists. “We would love to see arts, crafts, woodworking and flowers,” said Daugherty. “Our goal is to have a weekly showcase of locally grown, baked and hand-made products.”
The market will be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday through Oct. 12 at the Dollar Plus.
Setup fees are being waived for a limited time; vendors should sign up soon.
