FHS cross-country runs well at Washington

By ALLYUS FRITZ/Ledger sports editor | Oct 02, 2013

The Fairfield cross-country team put together another strong performance Tuesday, running its way to second and fourth place finishes in Washington.

The girl’s second place finish was led by Taylor Ferrel, who finished third overall and only four seconds behind the second place finisher.

“I can’t say enough about this group of girls,” Fairfield coach Jerrod Belzer said. “I challenge them to give more and more every night and they always seem to find a way to improve as a team.”

Ashlyn Elmore and Maggie Ferrel each had top 10 performances. The next five Fairfield girls finished from 13th to 17th.

“The girls know they still have work to do but I have confidence in them and more importantly, they have confidence in themselves,” Belzer said.

The boys finished fourth with Nathan Haerr leading the way in 12th place. Benjamin Boender ran another strong race as well, coming in three spots behind Haerr.

“We haven’t had a meet all year where we had all of our guys,” Belzer said. “So I think it’s safe to say that these final meets are going to be their best.”

Looking forward, the girls know that a conference title is still a possibility. Mount Pleasant is the conference favorite, but Fairfield and Fort Madison are close behind.

Fairfield’s next meet is Monday at IMS.
