FHS Roundup: Hammel is medalist; tennis teams win
On Thursday, the Fairfield girls’ golf team shot a 195, winning the triangular meet at Walton Club, defeating Keokuk (271) and Davis County who only carded three girls so had no team score.
Medalist for the meet was Trojan Olivia Hammel who shot a 44, and runner-up was Kylee Marlay, 46.
Also for Fairfield, Taylor Marlay shot 52, Joli Swan 53, Kaelyn Strong 64 and Megan Higgins 72.
Boys’ golf places seventh at meet
In a nine-team golf tournament on April 11 at Albia, the Fairfield Trojan boys’ golf team placed seventh.
For Fairfield, Zach Steele fired a 91, Jackson Weaton and Aaron Haines each scored a 95,
Tyler Huff and Josh Brewington each shot 107 and Spencer Else 115.
Fairfield’s overall record is 3-7.
Chareonkul leads tennis team, wins match 8-0
The Fairfield Trojan girls’ tennis team defeated host Mt. Pleasant on Thursday, 6-3.
In singles, the Trojans won 4 of 6 matches. Anatta Chareonkul defeated Meagan Sutherland 8-0, Dayna Price beat Thuan Tran 8-6, Hermela Gebremariam defeated Kylie Sourwine 8-2 and Anna Beasley beat Erin Zihlman.
In doubles, Charoenkul-Gebremariam won 8-3 and Beasley-Ashley Pool won 8-5.
In JV action, Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant tied 8-8.
Winning a doubles match for Fairfield was Allison Krumboltz-Abbey Gridley. Trojans Peyton Manley-Lynsey Finney won two doubles matches.
Winning JV singles matches for Fairfield were Krumboltz, Natalie Brader, Amanda Raines, Manley and Lucia Van Dijk.
Trojans win 5-4
The Fairfield Trojan boys’ tennis team defeated host Mt. Pleasant 5-4 on Thursday.
Three Trojans won singles matches. Elijah Parr defeated Joey Holtkamp 8-6, Logan Williams beat Elijah Plooster 9-7 and Brandon Winkleman beat Nick Scandeen 8-3.
Parr-Gannon Courtright won their doubles match 8-3 and Williams-Winkleman won their doubles match 8-6.
Williams-Winkleman were trailing 6-2 before winning six straight games, giving Fairfield the overall team victory.
In JV action, Fairfield’s AJ Greiner and Will Sheppard won their singles match and combined to win their doubles match.
On April 10, the Trojan varsity team fell to host Davis County 7-2.
“Most matches were competitive,” said Fairfield head coach Bill Sheppard. “Congratulations to Navin Martin who pulled out a 9-7 victory after falling behind 4-6, and to Logan Williams who posted his second straight singles victory.”
Greiner and Jarrod Willman each won a JV singles match.
