First Baptist Church hosts free clothing, blankets Nov. 23
On Black Friday, the big shopping day after Thanksgiving, First Baptist Church will host Caring through Clothing from 9 a.m. to noon, Nov. 23, in Fellowship Hall. Community members can enjoy a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, hot apple cider and cookies while “shopping” for clothing, shoes, winter apparel and blankets — all free of charge.
“Now that the weather is turning colder, we have many people in our community who are struggling to stay warm,” said event coordinator Staci Wright. “Those of us who have been very blessed don’t realize the large number of people in the Fairfield area who struggle to meet even the most basic needs of their families.”
Wright has collected clothes for high school students for several years; however, as people learned she was seeking donated clothing, the number of donations began to exceed what she could use or reasonably store. After discussing the matter with officials at her church, Wright decided to take a leap of faith and begin a clothing give-away.
The response has been overwhelming, she said, and many people have already stepped forward with donations or with offers to help.
Wright said a few people have a hard time believing people will give away clothing at no cost. Some have asked “if there is some kind of a catch.”
“There’s no catch, it’s not a trick and there are no hidden agendas. We want to help people and show kindness and compassion for our fellow man. That’s our objective,” Wright said. “I believe our greatest mission is one that sometimes goes overlooked, and that is to help those in our own community who are struggling and need support.
“We are not here to judge one another’s circumstances,” she said. “We are called simply to help.”
To assist in any way with Caring through Clothing or to donate clothing items contact Wright at 919-6328 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The church asks that donated clothes and blankets be free of stains, tears, etc. and are freshly laundered. Non-clothing items, with the exception of blankets, will not be accepted.
