First Lutheran Church awards annual scholarships
First Lutheran Church in Fairfield (ELCA) recently announced the recipients of the scholarships and scholarship/loans for 2014. This is the fourteenth year of awarding Student loan/scholarships, and the sum of $5,600 is being awarded to Megan Thompson, Erin Thompson, Rachel Schwarz, Grant Curran, Keri Schwarz, Daniel Schwarz and Haley Grunwald in shares of $800 each. Megan is in her final semester in the school of Physical Therapy at the University of Iowa. Erin will be a sophomore at Simpson College. Grant Curran is a junior at the University of Iowa. Rachel Schwarz is a senior at the University of Northern Iowa. Daniel is a second year student at Indian Hills Community College. Haley will be a sophomore at St. Norbert College and Keri will be in her first year at Iowa State University.
Half of the amounts awarded are to be repaid within five years, with no interest, after the recipients complete their formal education. The loan ortion starts accruing interest at 5 percent if not paid within the five-year time period.
Thanks to the generosity of the families of Dale and Mildred Krumboltz and Dr. and Mrs. James Dunlevy, respectively, First Lutheran is also awarding the sum of $400 to Haley Grunwald and the sum of $400 each to Grant Curran and Megan Thompson. Keri Schwarz is the recipient of the Dillon and Kitty Turney family scholarship of $1,000. These three scholarships are endowed by family gifts to First Lutheran, and the earnings each year fund the scholarships.
In the fourteen years of awarding the various scholarships and scholarship loans, more than $95,000 has been awarded to the youth of First Lutheran to help them in furthering their education. The recipients are also encouraged to “pay it forward” in whatever church they attend after their formal education is completed.
