FMS band camp starts Monday
The Fairfield Middle School Summer Band Camp will be Monday through Aug. 22 for students entering sixth through eighth grades who have previously played in band.
This is an optional concert band camp in which students will refresh their skills and music terminology, as well as learn six to 10 pieces of music, warm-up techniques and scales, while rehearsing in sectionals, small- and large-group settings. Incoming sixth-grade students also study from the band curriculum book “Standard of Excellence.”
The students will conclude the camp with a concert on the last day.
The camp rehearsal schedule is 8-9:15 a.m. for incoming sixth-grade students and 9:45-11a.m. for incoming seventh- and eighth-grade students. All of the Fairfield school district band staff work with students, including Jim Edgeton Fairfield High School band instructor; Aaron Adam, FHS and FMS band instructor; and Mary Andersen, FMS band instructor and band camp coordinator.
Many FHS band students attend as mentors and volunteers, so the the FMS students get individualized attention and can advance their skills quickly or work on areas of concern during camp.
During the two week camp, there is as much music learned as typically covered in an entire semester of school rehearsals, said Andersen.
Students can still sign up for the camp by attending on the first day.
The fee is $40 for the two-week session. Checks should be made payable to Fairfield Band Aides.
Any questions about the camp can be addressed to Andersen at email@example.com or by calling her at the middle school at 472-5019.
