FMS girls capture perfection
WASHINGTON, Iowa — With a perfect season within reach Friday, Fairfield Middle School’s eighth-grade girls didn’t disappoint.
The Trojan ‘A’ team blasted Washington 47-7 in the season finale to wrap up their second straight perfect season at 12-0. Last season, they finished 11-0 at the seventh-grade level.
“I am just really proud of all the girls this year and the great season we had yet again,” Fairfield coach Derek Philips said. “They play the game the way it is supposed to be played. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this group.”
Sam Fritz and Kaylee Watson paced the Trojans Friday with 12 points apiece. Kenady Waugh scored seven, and Haley Beard, Kylie Kurtz, Mikaela Lunsford and Brooke McLain all scored four points.
Fairfield was up 27-2 at the intermission.
“Our defense was really solid tonight. [Washington] didn’t get many shot opportunities, even after we pulled the press off in the first quarter,” said Philips. “We missed some layups, but didn’t get down on ourselves.”
Due to Washington’s low numbers, only an ‘A’ game was played.
