FMS girls rout Demons in opener
Fairfield Middle School’s eighth-grade girls’ basketball team opened its season Tuesday and picked up right where it left off last season.
The Trojans held rival Washington to zero field goals until late in the fourth quarter and rolled to a 51-10 victory in Fairfield.
Sami Fritz led all scorers with 10 points, Brooke McLain had eight and Kenady Waugh scored seven. Kylie Kurtz, Kaylee Watson and Brynna Bowman tallied six points apiece, Haley Beard scored four, and Mikaela Lunsford and Kailey Kaska both chipped in two points.
“We had a pretty solid first game. We were able to get some quick points off of steals, which really helped set the tone for the game,” said head coach Derek Philips. “We hopefully shook some rust off both defensively and offensively. There are some things we will want to fix before the next game, but I was very pleased with our effort.”
No ‘B’ or ‘C’ games were played due to Washington only having eight girls.
Fairfield continues its season next Tuesday at Ottumwa.
