Four area gridders named all-state selections
The Fairfield and Pekin football teams grabbed two spots apiece on the all-state football teams selected by the Iowa Newspaper Association.
Fairfield’s Jake Mineart, a senior, was named to the Class 3A second team, and senior teammate Spencer Peterman was selected to the Class 3A third team.
Mineart fills an offensive line position on the squad after having a standout season on both sides of the ball. His hard work in the trenches helped the Trojans eclipse the 1,600-yard rushing mark this season, and his pass protection was equally impressive. Mineart makes his first appearance on the all-state squad.
Peterman, another first-time choice, easily led southeast Iowa in receptions this season, but he also ranked atop the entire state. The explosive wide receiver caught a Class 3A-leading 55 passes for 729 yards this fall, and six of his catches were for touchdowns.
Pekin senior Quentin Garrels, the 2012 Class A District 6 captain, and junior teammate Jared Bond were both selected to the Class A all-state second team. Garrels is a repeat selection while Bond makes his first appearance on the team.
Garrels juked and barreled his way to all-state honors at running back. The electric senior rushed for 1,877 yards and 31 regular season touchdowns. His nine yards per carry ranked him among the best in the state.
Like Mineart for Fairfield, Bond did his share of the work on both sides of the ball but lands all-state recognition for his work on the defensive line. The junior sensation led the Panther defense with 85 tackles, including six for a loss and one sack.
