Fritz lifts ‘A’ team to fourth straight victory
Sam Fritz ignited to score more than half her team’s points as the Trojan eighth-grade girls crushed Aldo Leopold 42-13 in ‘A’ team action Tuesday in Fairfield.
Fritz rolled off 26 points to lead the Trojans to their fourth straight victory to open the season. Fairfield’s Kaylee Watson scored six, and Mikaela Lunsford and Brynna Bowman netted four points each. Kylie Kurtz added two points.
And as good as the Trojans looked on offense, they might have been even better on defense. Fairfield held Aldo Leopold to no points in the third quarter and stifled their opponent throughout the game.
“This was the first time we saw a zone defense this year. It didn’t take long for the girls to adapt, though, as we started attacking gaps and hitting some shots,” said Fairfield coach Derek Philips. “We passed the ball much better tonight. We played really well tonight.”
It was the same story for Fairfield in the ‘B’ game: another win.
Behind Natalie Angstead’s 10 points and Sarah Swanson’s six, the Trojan ‘B’-teamers rolled to an equally impressive 29-10 victory. Maggie Ferrel and Kailey Kaska had four points, Shelby Heston and Kellie Hovorka each scored two, and Ashyln Elmore tacked on one point.
“Our girls played great tonight. Our offense really clicked and our defense was solid,” Philips said. “These girls did a lot of great things tonight. The coaches were really proud of how we played.”
The Trojans have a week off before traveling to Fort Madison next Tuesday.
