Fritz, Lunsford each earn win
Fairfield’s Michael Fritz and Brendon Lunsford each won a match in Day 1 of the State Wrestling Meet at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Thursday night.
Competing in the 195-pound class, Fritz had to forfeit his first match due to an injury. Later, the senior came back to win his second match.
“Michael showed tremendous willpower,” said Jeff Courtright, Fairfield athletics coordinator. “He again showed why he is one of the school’s all-time best, hardest working and mentally tough wrestlers.
“He is in pain, you can see that. But to come back and win a match at state shows the great desire he has.”
Competing in the 285-weight class, Lunsford, a junior, was defeated in his first match, shrugged that off and came back to win his second bout.
“Our coaching staff does such a great job of instilling in our wrestlers to quickly put the past behind you,” Courtright said. “And this was a perfect example of that. Brendon didn’t let the first match bother him a bit.
“In his second match, Brendon was the aggressor, staying in good position, and displayed the characteristics that make him such a great wrestler.
“Our coaches tell the kids, ‘Have fun, be hungry and get after it.’ And that’s what Brendon did in that second match. He won and he beat a very solid opponent, too.”
Lunsford and Fritz are each 2017 District Meet champions.
Both are scheduled to compete around 2:30 p.m. today. With a win, they would compete again at 8:45 p.m.
