Garrels earns title Saturday
KEOSAUQUA — Van Buren’s Mitch Garrels claimed the 195-pound title at his team’s own wrestling tournament Saturday in Keosauqua.
Garrels rolled through the tournament unscathed after finishing third as a sophomore last season. His team-high finish helped the Warriors to a fifth-place finish in the team standings with 111 points.
One other Warrior, Curtis Thomas, made it to the championship round at 182 pounds but had to settle for second place. Jacob Heisel placed third in the 126 weight class.
Also for the Warriors, Hunter Coffman and Dakota LaRue earned fourth-place finishes at 132 and 170 pounds, respectively. Fifth-place finishes came from Tyler Runyon at 113 pounds and Jesse Fuller at 145.
Van Buren visits Davis County on Thursday.
Cale leads Comets
Cardinal 113-pound junior Ryan Cale was runner-up at Saturday’s tournament in Keosauqua, leading the Comets to a sixth-place team finish.
Cardinal also had a third-place finish from Josh Ramos at 170 pounds. Patrick Lind finished in fourth at 145.
The Comets are at a triangular at WACO Tuesday.
