Gem, mineral show opens Friday
The Sac & Fox Lapidary Club will host its annual gem, mineral and fossil show Friday through Sunday at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.
The theme for 2016 is “Rock of Ages — The History of Birthstones.”
The show hours will be 6-9 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Admission is $4 for adults; $1 for youth ages 6-16; and free for children under age 5.
The show brings vendors from Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri, with wares from all over the world: gems, jewels, pearls, geodes, fossils, rocks, minerals, carvings, books, jewelry and more.
As well as vendors, the show will have displays of fossils, minerals and rocks. Indian Hills Community College will have representatives with microscopes at its display to allow people to look deep inside some rock specimens.
Ryan Clark from the University of Iowa will give a presentation on mining in Iowa at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The show also will feature demonstrations, door prizes, a silent auction, the Winning Wheel, digging for treasure at the Ol’ Glory Hole Mine, children’s activities and more.
The Sac & Fox Lapidary Club members changed the dates for the annual show last year to October so that area schools could plan field trips to the event.
“We really want to encourage this as the show is very educational,” said Betty Morris, the show chairwoman.
To celebrate the annual show, a special display was prepared at the Fairfield Public Library entryway by Morris and club member Dennis Kossow.
