The smell of gingerbread filled the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center ticket office lobby during the Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk Gingerbread Extravaganza contest Dec. 6.

Grand prize winners were the Wibben sisters, Chari, Lisa and Lori, who are the owners of Ruby’s Bakery in Mount Pleasant. The sisters received a ribbon, certificate and four tickets to the holiday program “Celtic Christmas: Cherish the Ladies,” donated by the convention center.

First place in the kids’ category was awarded to a group of friends: Leanna, Arwyod, Chacho, Marisol, Serenity, Nora, Jeremy and Autum, who built a village. The village is made of eight houses, a square and all its landscaping. They received a ribbon and certificate. The work is on display in the window at Fairfield Nutrition.

Second place in the kids’ category went to Girl Scout Troop 9297. The Girl Scouts constructed a house in a box, which is on display in the front window of the Iowa State Bank

The adult category prize went to Astrid Hoose, whose crèche was on display at the Fairfield Public Library.

Cindy Woodbury, executive director of the Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk, said, “Thank you to everyone who participated in the contest and to all the artists and volunteers who decorated a house which was sold through the Fairfield [Area] Chamber of Commerce and are on display in many area businesses. These works of art take hours to make and decorate. We appreciate your efforts.”

“Though the night was our first bitter taste of winter, there were many hearty souls who came out to enjoy the holiday kick off with art walk,” Woodbury said.

Partners and sponsors for the December art walk were Fairfield Hy-Vee Food and Drug Store; Fairfield Art Association, Fairfield Public Library and the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

The next art walk will be 6-9 p.m. Jan. 3, with the theme “Winter Blues.”
