Groups to pursue lawsuit against hog farm near Keosauqua
DES MOINES (AP) — Environmental and animal welfare organizations have filed a notice of intent to sue a southeast Iowa hog farm after it spilled thousands of gallons of hog manure earlier this month into a creek near the Des Moines River.
Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, represented by the Environmental Integrity Project, and the Humane Society of the United States say Thursday they intend to sue Maschhoff Pork, an Illinois company which operates a farm near Keosauqua.
The organizations want the company to obtain a Clean Water Act permit to force it to conform to stricter rules.
Company spokeswoman Julie Maschhoff says the company has always operated within current regulations and continues to do so.
The Keosauqua farm houses nearly 7,500 sows producing 11 million gallons of manure a year.
