Health center, Cambridge named as top 100 workplaces
Jefferson County Health Center has been named one of the Top 100 Iowa Workplaces in The Des Moines Register’s third annual report identifying the best places to work and what makes them special.
Jefferson County Health Center CEO and administrator Deb Cardin announced the honor to the board of trustees during their meeting Monday evening. She said the Top 100 Iowa Workplaces was printed Sunday in the Des Moines Register, and the awards banquet was held Monday.
The health center, with 192 employees, was listed as No. 17 on the list of midsized employers.
Cambridge Investment Research Inc., the financial services broker dealer headquartered in Fairfield with 457 employees was No. 23. It was the third time Cambridge has been in the Top 100 Iowa Workplaces.
The No. 1 midsized employer was Quick Trip.
“This is a really nice recognition for our employees,” said Cardin.
Cardin explained the rankings are based on employees’ evaluations, not what The Des Moines Register thinks about the workplaces.
The Register and its research partner, Workplace Dynamics, asked employees what was most important to them and to rate their employers on those priorities. Any organization with at least 35 employees in Iowa could participate in the free survey.
According to The Des Moines Register’s explanation, “Employees respond to a set of statements — such as ‘I feel genuinely appreciated at this company,’ ‘My pay is fair for the work I do,’ and ‘My manager cares abut my concerns’ — using a seven-point Likert scale. Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a high correlation with how employees feel about their workplace, which is calculated by correlating the statement responses to a control question that asks each employee to rate his or her workplace on a scale of zero to 99.”
The 179 employers that participated employ 78,608 people in Iowa; 48,589 Iowa employees received surveys, and 33,659 responded. A certain percentage of responses were required.

Cardin showed the health center’s 3-minute video featuring interviews with employees to those at the board of trustee meeting.
“The video is awesome,” said trustee Julie Greeson.
“That’s great,” agreed trustee Bob Keller.
Cardin said the health center will celebrate its 100 Top Iowa Workplaces honor with an employee picnic Oct. 1.
