Heartland Pregnancy Center plans run, walk for anniversary
OTTUMWA — Heartland Pregnancy Center, which has been serving Ottumwa and the surrounding communities for more than 20 years, is celebrating its anniversary with a 5K run and 1-mile walk June 22 at Jefferson County Park.
The event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit organization which is dedicated to providing “compassionate Christian care ... to families experiencing needs related to pregnancy.” It has had more than 16,000 client visits since 1992.
Heartland’s Board Chairwoman Therese Cummiskey explained the two ways to support Heartland Pregnancy Center during the event.
“We call it Pay It or Pledge it,” she said. “If running or walking is your main intent then just pay the registration fee [$35 or $25 if registered before Monday]. Your fee will buy items, such as diapers, wipes, clothing, blankets and formula for our new moms and their families.
“But if you’d like to ‘go the extra mile,’ so to speak,” continued Cummiskey, “participants can seek sponsorship and ask their friends and families to support them during their run or walk. These additional funds beyond a runner or walker’s registration fee are essential for the free services we offer. For example, $50 will buy a car seat, $100 buys a crib. Plus it helps with the cost of keeping the center up and running.”
Check-in time for runners is 7 a.m., with the race beginning at 8 a.m.
Walkers may check in and begin walking any time between 8:15-8:30 a.m.
