Saturday was a busy day at Bonnifield Log House in Old Settlers Park. The morning found a crowd of about 35 wrapped in blankets against the chill as they listened to Michael Zahs speak about “Iowa History in a Cloth Bag,” relating to the manufacture and use of cloth bags from the mid 1800s. Zahs showed one of the many quilts using small scraps of feed sacks which contained 11,700 pieces in a “Grandmother’s Flower Garden” pattern. Perhaps even more interesting than the re-use of the bags as dresses, shirts, quilts, curtains, aprons and even underwear was the use of the string removed from the bags and saved. Zahs holds a dresser scarf crocheted from these strings.
