Ide Gymnastics wins 12 first place trophiesAAU meet was held in Waterloo
Many Ide Gymnastics participants have qualified to continue jumping and tumbling well into July.
The Ide Gymnastics team competed Saturday at the AAU State Championships that were held at Waterloo East High School. First place finishers will get to compete at nationals in July. Ide Gymnastics had 11 different athletes earn a first place finish.
There were nearly 25 teams from Iowa at the meet. Each gymnast only goes up against those who are in the same age and skill group. There are seven different skill groups, starting with beginner.
“It’s kind of nice that way because then they all compete against level opponents,” said coach Jeff Ide.
Kiara Bickham is still undefeated in beginner trampoline for 9-year-olds after she scored a 16.70 and won her group. Bickham will also be traveling to Louisville in June for the United States Tumbling and Trampoline Association Nationals. She received a fifth place in a separate category.
Conner Weatherly got two first place finishes in the 11-year-old boys trampoline and double-mini categories. Olivia McClaran received the highest score of any Ide Gymnastics performer, which was a 59.50 in the double-mini novice 11-year-old girl category. McClaran had a busy day, and would go on to earn second and third place finishes as well.
Kristin Burnstedt, Ashlyn Elmore, Ella Jirak, Alexis Jirak, Alani Diyaljee, Andrew Twohill, Bryanna Popejoy and Nicholas Kaska each received a first place finish in Waterloo and will be making the trip to Des Moines this summer.
Additional second place finishers were Popejoy in beginner double-mini, Kaska over beginner double-mini and Michelle Zhang for novice trampoline. A large number of Ide gymnasts took home third through eighth place trophies.
