Ide Gymnastics wins big at national meet
Ide Gymnastics competed for the first time at the AAU Junior Olympic Nationals in Des Moines, which were held July 23 through Sunday.
After four days of competition many of the 14 Ide Gymnastics athletes walked away with medals, including Andrew Twohill, who won three gold medals. Twohill competed in the tumbling, double-mini and trampoline categories.
Each of these athletes competes against their own age group and against those who are the same level athletically. Each athlete had already qualified for the national event and placed in the top 10 of preliminaries in order to advance to the finals.
Kristin Burnstedt, who teamed up with Cory Oakes from Indianola, achieved the score of 9.8 in synchronized trampoline, which earned the team a gold medal.
Kiara Bickham was consistent in her two trampoline routines, which earned her a gold medal. Conner Weatherly performed the same way on the boys’ side of the action, earning him gold medals in trampoline and double-mini. Michelle Zhang secured gold medals in trampoline and double-mini with powerful performances.
Ashlyn Elmore was nearly perfect when she competed for and won the double-mini gold medal. Ella Jirak used her incredible form to win gold in the double-mini competition and on the trampoline. Jirak couldn’t compete the trifecta and got second place in tumbling after losing by just eight one-hundredths of a point.
Elmore, Jirak and Zhang each earned a spot on the All-American double-mini team after placing the highest scores at the meet. Iowa’s team earned an overall first place in the category thanks to those performances. In the end, 91 percent of Fairfield’s team placed in the top 10 nationally.
Ashlyn Scheuermann, Kaitlyn Scheuermann, Olivia McClaran, Amber Burroughs, Alani Diyaljee and Kaitlyn Greiner represented the Fairfield squad in Des Moines as well.
