IHCC forms Indian Hills Midwest Photonics Alliance
OTTUMWA – In an effort to advance the growth of the photonics industry in southern Iowa, the Regional Economic Advancement division of Indian Hills Community College has formed the Indian Hills Midwest Photonics Alliance.
The alliance is a collaborative partnership between Indian Hills and multiple economic development organizations in Indian Hills’ 10-county region. It also is supported by the Iowa Economic Development Authority.
“Indian Hills is very excited to be a part of the collaborative effort to build a photonics industry in southern Iowa,” said Tom Rubel, Indian Hills executive dean of Regional Economic Advancement and project coordinator. “Currently, our laser/electro-optics program educates technicians that are in high demand at the national level. With an industry-recognized workforce pipeline already in place, it only makes sense to make every effort to encourage photonics companies to expand in our area.”
One of the first goals of the alliance is to spread the word about the resources that southern Iowa has available to the photonics industry. As a result, a team will be traveling to San Francisco during the first week of February to attend the Photonics West Conference.
Photonics West is the largest event geared toward the laser and photonics community with more than 1,200 companies represented. Not only will the team be visiting with representatives from existing companies, but they also will be making an effort to contact individuals who may be interested in starting a new business in this expanding industry.
