Indians take opener from Fairfield boys
OSKALOOSA — The Trojan boys stayed even with Oskaloosa through one half of play Monday, but they couldn’t maintain the pace late and dropped their season opener 46-31.
The Trojans led 9-8 after the first quarter and went into the locker room tied 19-all at halftime, but a slow start to the second half put the game out of reach. Oskaloosa led 34-24 after three quarters and continued to out-score Fairfield in the final period.
“There’s not a lot of confidence right now out of that group. We need to find a way to score,” said third-year head coach Tyler Miklo. “It was disappointing, but it’s a young group that’s learning to play together.
“We’ll keep working at it and hopefully we’ll figure it out,” he added.
Oskaloosa senior Tyce Sarver led all scorers with 24 points. Drew Richmond chipped in six points for the Indians, who are now 1-0 on the season.
Miklo blamed the second half scoring drought on what he called “rookie mistakes,” also faulting his inexperienced players for hesitating on open shots.
“Hopefully they’re good enough to learn from those mistakes so they don’t repeat them,” Miklo said.
The head coach also thought his players did a better job attacking the basket and capitalizing from the charity stripe in the first half. The Trojans shot eight free throws in the first half and just three in the second.
“They tried to take away our height advantage in the second half, and we have to find ways to get the ball inside,” Miklo said. “We didn’t do it in the second half.”
Senior Spencer Peterman led the Trojans with eight points and 10 rebounds, with four of his boards coming on the offensive glass. Vince Horras, a junior, scored five points and blocked two shots, and senior Darrin Dimmitt scored five and supplied four assists. Junior Matt Carr finished with four points and six rebounds, and senior Kyle Weirup chipped in three points.
Also for Fairfield, Landon Gamrath, Joe Hietpas and Jordan Whitney scored two points each. Gamrath also had two blocked shots.
A tough matchup awaits the Trojans (0-1) this Friday when they host defending Class 3A champion Mount Pleasant.
