Iowa City traffic camera foes turn in signatures

Apr 03, 2013

IOWA CITY (AP) — A leader of a group opposing traffic cameras in Iowa City is confident that more than enough signatures have been gathered to force the City Council to rethink its drive toward installation of the cameras.

Aleksey Gurtovoy says more than 3,300 signatures were turned in on Monday.

The city attorney says the group needed at least 2,500 valid signatures of registered voters.

Gurtovoy, Martha Hampel and others have been seeking an initiative that would give the decision on cameras to the city's voters.

In February last year the City Council approved a resolution that would let city staffers investigate installation of cameras at certain intersections. None has been installed yet.

A 2012 petition effort to put the camera decision up for a public vote failed to get enough signatures.
