Iowa crews rescue driver of truck hit by train
SIOUX CITY (AP) — A driver is lucky to be alive after his tanker truck was crushed in a collision with a train in northwest Iowa.
Sioux City television station KTIV reports that the collision happened in Sioux City’s Leeds neighborhood around 7 p.m. Monday.
Investigators say the train sounded its horn at the crossing, but that the tanker pulled into the train’s path. The impact caused the tanker to flip, crushing the cab and trapping the driver inside. Rescue crews cut the cab to free him. Witnesses say the driver waved to onlookers as he was pulled from the cab. He was taken to a local hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
The truck was carrying fertilizer, which crews had to clean up before moving the tanker.
