Iowa man charged with killing father ruled not guilty
MASON CITY (AP) — A judge says a Mason City man is not guilty by reason of insanity for the fatal stabbing of his father.
Judge Gregg Rosenbladt ruled Wednesday that the psychotic episode experienced by 43-year-old Thomas Barlas Jr. rendered him incapable of comprehending right from wrong. Barlas was charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 73-year-old Thomas Barlas Sr. He was killed at his Mason City home on July 18 last year.
Prosecution and defense psychiatrists concluded that Thomas Barlas Jr. suffered from psychosis, delusions and paranoid behavior. He will be evaluated at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Oakdale. After that, a court hearing will be held to determine what will happen to him.
