Iowa newspapers name All-State baseball teams
The Iowa Newspaper Association has named its All-State Baseball teams for the 2013 season.
First, second and third teams were made for 1A-4A. A captain was elected to each of the four classes.
Joseph Hietpas from Fairfield was named a First Team pitcher in 3A. Hietpas finished the season with a record of 7-2 and a 1.49 ERA. Coach Josh Allison says Hietpas is definitely the ace of the Trojan roster.
“He’s gotten a lot stronger since last season,” Allison said. ”It’s a lesson to the young kids out there that if you put in the time in the offseason then good things happen.”
Justin Dilks, Mount Pleasant’s junior first baseman, was selected to 3A’s Second Team. Dilks batted .455 and led the team with 39 RBIs.
Van Buren’s state runner-up squad wound up with two players receiving honors. Junior Robby Laughlin made the 1A First Team as a utility player and Garrett Saunders made Third Team as an infielder. Laughlin batted .422 with 37 RBIs while Saunders batted .379 with 36 RBIs. Each player had three home runs.
Casey Hall out of Newman Catholic was selected as the Class 1A Captain. Newman Catholic beat Van Buren to win the 1A State Championship. He pitched his way to a selection, ending with an 8-2 record and a 1.05 ERA in 73 innings pitched.
