Iowa slaying  suspect won’t face insurance charge

Apr 12, 2013

DES MOINES (AP) — Prosecutors have dropped an unrelated charge filed against a man who has reported police harassment as he awaits his second trial in a 1996 Des Moines slaying.

The Des Moines Register says attorneys for David Flores showed proof to authorities on Thursday that Flores had vehicle insurance when he was pulled over on Feb. 14.

Flores was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for killing Phyllis Davis during a rolling gunbattle between rival gangs in 1996. He won a new trial based on new evidence.

Flores says he’s been pulled over at least 14 times since he left custody in March 2012. Police spokesman Jason Halifax says there’s no organized effort to harass Flores.

Court records say his second trial is scheduled to begin June 3.
