Iowa Western football wins NJCAA title
CEDAR FALLS — Iowa Western football hoisted its first NJCAA title following a 27-7 win over Butler Community College Sunday at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls.
Former Fairfield High School graduates Mike Smithburg and Jake Dunbar were starters on the national champion squad. Smithburg was offensive right guard and Dunbar served as both punter and placeholder.
The Reivers broke a 0-all tie in the second quarter on a 6-yard run by quarterback Jake Waters, and they took a 14-0 lead into halftime following an 88-yard interception for a touchdown by safety James Garlock.
Iowa Western tacked on one final touchdown in the third quarter to go up 21-0, and kicker Lance Irvin hit two field goals in the final period.
Butler got its only points on a 1-yard touchdown run with just under nine minutes left in the game.
